Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific), is visiting Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China, from November 26 to
29, 2001.
In Hong Kong, Dr. Pagtakhan will address the 14th General Meeting of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council
(PECC). This non-governmental organization, founded in 1980, brings together government officials, business leaders and
academics of 25 Pacific Rim economies to discuss economic growth and development in the region. The theme of this
year's PECC General Meeting is "Managing Globalization in the 21st Century."
In Guangzhou, Secretary of State Pagtakhan will meet with the Governor of the province of Guangdong, Lu Rui Hua, and
the Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Dr. Su Ze Qun. He will also participate in meetings with senior representatives of Canadian
companies doing business in south China. Finally, Dr. Pagtakhan will visit the Good Health for Mothers and Children
Partnership Project, jointly managed by the Guangzhou and Vancouver Children's Hospitals and funded by the Canadian
International Development Agency.
