STATEMENT BY MINISTER MACKAY CONDEMNING BOMBINGS IN DAHAB, EGYPT

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay today issued the following statement regarding the explosions that killed up to 22 people and wounded 150 others in the Egyptian Sinai resort town of Dahab on Monday, April 24, 2006:

“Canadians are deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by the terrorist attack in Dahab, Egypt. Our personnel in Egypt are in contact with local authorities to determine whether Canadians have been affected by this incident. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Egypt and to all other countries affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“Canada strongly condemns this terrorist act, and we are profoundly troubled by such events. Although the details are still unfolding, this is clearly an act directed against innocent civilians. The perpetrators must be found and brought to justice.”

Anyone with reason to believe that Canadian friends or relatives may have been in Dahab is invited to call Foreign Affairs Canada. Call toll-free from Canada or the United States at 1 800 387-3124 or call collect at (613) 996-8885.
