STATEMENT BY MINISTER MACKAY ON IAEA DIRECTOR
GENERAL’S REPORT TO UNSC ON IRAN’S NUCLEAR PROGRAM
Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay today issued the following statement regarding
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General’s April 28, 2006 report
to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Iran’s nuclear program:
“The report on Iran’s nuclear program confirms that Iran did not heed the Security
Council’s call to immediately re-establish the full, sustained and verifiable suspension of
all nuclear enrichment and reprocessing activities, and that it is still not fully cooperating
with the IAEA.
“Canada deplores Iran’s failure to return to the voluntary suspension of all sensitive
nuclear activities in order to restore the international community’s confidence in the
peaceful nature of its nuclear program. As a result of Iran’s latest actions, the
international community’s ongoing and serious concerns about Iran’s nuclear activities
remain unaddressed while indignation grows at the bellicose and anti-Semitic
statements of Iran’s President. It is essential that the Security Council consider further
measures as soon as possible. We believe that these measures should be phased and
incremental, as well as reversible, and that they should seek to reinforce the authority of
the IAEA. The UNSC needs to impress upon Iran the international community’s firm
resolve to find a durable diplomatic solution, an outcome that Canada fully supports.
“Canada once again urges Iran to heed the repeated calls of the international
community and re-establish the conditions necessary for the resumption of negotiations
for a long-term peaceful solution.”
