Northern Affairs Program
Mines and Minerals


The Mineral Resources Directorate, located in the City of Gatineau (Hull sector), Quebec, develops policies and legislation to promote the sustainable development of mineral resources in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Effective April 1, 2003, responsibility for the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development's Northern Affairs Program (land and resource management) was transferred to the Government of Yukon. The directorate:

  • assesses and collects Crown royalties payable under the Yukon Quartz Mining Act External link to a Government of Canada site - A new browser window will open , the Yukon Placer Mining Act External link to a Government of Canada site - A new browser window will open , and the Canada Mining Regulations External link to a Government of Canada site - A new browser window will open.
  • conducts independent diamond valuations to ensure a fair royalty return to the Crown.
  • participates in environmental assessment of northern mining projects, mineral resource assessment, and land use planning.
  • promotes Aboriginal participation in mining.
