Northern Affairs Program Mines and Minerals
The Mineral Resources Directorate, located in the City of Gatineau (Hull sector), Quebec, develops policies and legislation to promote the sustainable development of mineral resources in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Effective April 1, 2003, responsibility for the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development's Northern Affairs Program (land and resource management) was transferred to the Government of Yukon. Please click on the link to the Government of Yukon 's corresponding pages.
The directorate:

assesses and collects Crown royalties payable under the
Yukon Quartz Mining Act
, the
Yukon Placer Mining Act
, and the
Canada Mining Regulations .
- conducts independent diamond valuations to ensure a fair royalty return to the Crown.
- participates in environmental assessment of northern mining projects, mineral resource assessment, and land use planning.
- promotes Aboriginal participation in mining.
