WAEMU countries: AfDB grants US$29.77 million for higher education

Prepared by the International Financing Division, ITCan

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) signed a protocol agreement for a grant equal to US$29.77 million. The African Development Fund grant will finance a higher education support project in WAEMU member countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo). Funds will be used to finance reform programmes and harmonize higher education systems, provide support to academic research, strengthen the capacity of teachers and researchers, integrate information and communication technologies in teaching methods, adopt efficient management practices, and help train 2,000 teachers and researchers and 500 administrative and support staff.
