DIPLOMATIC APPOINTMENT

Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced the following diplomatic appointment:

Raymond A.J. Chrétien becomes Ambassador to the French Republic.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Raymond A. J. Chrétien (BA, Joliette Seminary, 1962; LLL, Université Laval, 1965; successful completion of the examinations of the Bar of the Province of Quebec, 1966) joined the Department of External Affairs in 1966. He served abroad in New York, Beirut, Paris and, as Ambassador, in Kinshasa from 1978 to 1981, in Mexico City from 1985 to 1988, and in Brussels from 1991 to 1994. In Ottawa, he held a number of senior positions, including Assistant Under-Secretary for Manufacturing Industries, Technology and Transport Bureau (1982-1983), Inspector General (1983-1985) and Associate Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs (1988-1991). Since 1994, Mr. Chrétien has served as Ambassador to the United States of America. He is married to Kay Rousseau and they have two children. Mr. Chrétien succeeds Jacques Roy.
