APPOINTMENTS TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF ASIA PACIFIC FOUNDATION OF
CANADA
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced the appointment of Edward Doherty, Keith Mitchell
and Michael Percy to the Board of Directors of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APFC).
The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, created in 1984 by an Act of Parliament, is a private non-profit
organization funded by the federal and provincial governments, with additional financial support from the private
sector. The APFC's mission is to help Canadians better understand and be more successful in this important
region.
The APFC and its subsidiaries, the GLOBE Foundation and the Canadian Education Centre Network, operate a
number of programs to further Canada's economic interests in the region. The APFC also houses the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum Study Centre, which promotes collaborative research and
disseminates information and analysis on APEC, as well as on priority issues for Canada's involvement in this
forum.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Edward Doherty is a New Brunswick ophthalmologist who maintains a practice in Saint John, specializing in
contact lenses and diseases of the eye. Dr. Doherty is also a lecturer in Continuing Medical Education at
Dalhousie University. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the University of New Brunswick
since 1993, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the New Brunswick Museum since 1996.
Keith Mitchell is a managing partner of the Vancouver law firm of Farris, Vaughan, Wills and Murphy. He holds
a Bachelor of Arts and a law degree from the University of British Colombia and, in 1985, was appointed
Queen's Counsel. Mr. Mitchell is currently a director of Weldwood of Canada Limited and various other private
North American and Asian-based companies.
Michael Percy is Dean of the Faculty of Business at the University of Alberta. Dr. Percy studied at the
University of Victoria and Queen's University from which he received a Ph.D. in economics in 1977. He has
researched and written extensively on different aspects of the Canadian economy including the forest sector.
