KILGOUR TO VISIT DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, GUYANA AND DOMINICA
Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa) David Kilgour today announced that he
will visit the Dominican Republic, Guyana and Dominica from August 15 to 21.
"Developing closer ties with the Americas, both politically and economically, is a priority
for Canada," said Kilgour. "During my trip, I expect to have discussions on a wide range
of bilateral and multilateral issues, with a particular focus on the roles of small
economies in the new global order. I will also review hemispheric issues with my
colleagues in light of the upcoming Summit of the Americas in Quebec City."
In Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Kilgour will represent Canada at the
inauguration ceremony of President Hipólito Mejía.
During his visit to Guyana, Kilgour will meet with President Bharrat Jagdeo, Foreign
Minister Clement Rohee, Leader of the Opposition Desmond Hoyte, senior officials of
the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) and the President of the
Elections Commission. He will visit two Canadian aid projects: a distance education
project in Lethem and an irrigation project in Annai.
Kilgour will then travel to Dominica, where he will meet with Prime Minister Roosevelt
Douglas. He will visit a Canadian aid project, as well as tour the CARIB Indian
Reservation and discuss a possible indigenous initiative.
