AXWORTHY EXPRESSES DEEP CONCERN OVER VIOLENCE
BETWEEN ISRAELIS AND PALESTINIANS
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today expressed deep concern over the recent violence
in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza and called on both parties to make all efforts necessary to end
the hostilities immediately. Mr. Axworthy also conveyed Canada's sorrow and condolences to
the families of the victims of the recent violence.
"We urge Israeli and Palestinian authorities to exercise restraint over their respective security
forces and hostile protesters," said Mr. Axworthy. "Inflammatory actions at this critical time in
the peace process serve only to disrupt negotiations and provoke violence." In this context, the
Minister also signalled his concern over Israeli opposition leader Sharon's visit to the Temple
Mount/Haram al-Sharif.
Mr. Axworthy reiterated Canada's long-standing belief that only comprehensive negotiations
between both parties can lead to a just and comprehensive solution to the conflict, and he called
on Prime Minister Barak and Chairman Arafat to continue to concentrate on that objective. The
Minister also expressed support for the efforts by the United States and Egypt to convene a
meeting of the parties to try to reinvigorate the peace process.
