CANADA ANNOUNCES $10 MILLION TO SUPPORT A DEMOCRATIC
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA
The Government of Canada today announced an initial package of $10 million to
support the people of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) during their
country's period of democratic transition in the post-Milosevic era. The funding is
destined for humanitarian assistance and support for democratic development,
and is being provided by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
Canada is responding to the immediate humanitarian needs in the FRY by
supporting a 'winterization' program that will provide heating supplies, shelter
and clothing through the coming winter. Canada will also provide a relief package
to assist some of the hundreds of thousands of refugees and internally displaced
persons to return to their home communities.
Canada strongly supports the FRY's new government in its transition to
democracy. On Monday, October 9, Canada announced that it had begun the
process of lifting sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Canada
plans to send an assessment mission to the FRY shortly, to identify areas for
possible additional assistance.
