Citizenship applications

The Consular Services Section of the Canadian Embassy in Berlin accepts and reviews citizenship applications on behalf of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The embassy and consulates can provide you with forms and information.

How to apply for a citizenship certificate

Please provide us with details of your case and we will send you the form and information you require. Or you may download a form from the internet.

Which form do you need?

Use form CIT-0006 (application for a citizenship certificate from outside Canada):

  • For children born outside Canada of a Canadian parent
  • For replacing your current certificate due to damage, loss, theft or change of name

  • You wish to carry out a search of record in the citizenship archives.

Where to send your application

Send your completed application, with the required documentation and the fee to the Consular Services Section, Canadian Embassy, Leipziger Platz 17, 10117 Berlin. After verification that your application is complete we will return your documents to you and forward your application to the Registrar of Citizenship in Sydney, Nova Scotia, for further processing.

Processing time

Depending on the case, the average processing time in Sydney, Nova Scotia, for a certificate of Canadian citizenship can take between 6 and 12 months. The processing of complex cases (renunciation) may take up to two years.

Required documents for applications for a certificate of Canadian citizenship

  1. Child's/ applicant’s birth certificate - if born in Germany, the original international version, which can be obtained from the German Standesamt (registrar’s office) that registered the birth
  2. Proof of one parent's Canadian citizenship, i.e. Canadian birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship
  3. Two pieces of ID; these are required for every applicant; for small children these can be health cards, school cards or immunization cards
  4. Two identical photographs as specified on the application form. Applicants under 14 years of age are not required to sign the photos.
  5. If the applicant is a child and the mother is the Canadian parent, please provide the parents’ marriage certificate.
  6. The fee which should be paid according to methods of payment
  7. If the applicant or the responsible parent has left Canada for longer than one year prior to 1977, a supplementary questionnaire and additional documents have to be submitted (please contact us to obtain this form).
