    Overview

Canada and Norway share a strong relationship underlined by vigorous cooperation and collaboration in various international fora. Canada and Norway have cooperated and co-founded several initiatives, particularly in the field of small arms, war-affected children and gender equality. They have a special partnership in the Human Security Network, having launched the international human security initiative by signing a bilateral Partnership for Action, entitled the "Lysøen Declaration" in 1998.

Canada has a bilateral fisheries agreement with Norway, and continues cooperation in multilateral fora such as NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization) and the Arctic Council. Over the past few years, new links have been formed between universities in Canada and Norway. A great deal of interest in promoting university-student exchanges between the two countries also exists. Norway and Canada hosted a bilateral meeting on Northern research in April 2001.

Canadian popular artists are very successful in Norway. A number of Canadian films have been distributed in Norway. A bilateral Audiovisual Co-production Agreement was signed in Oslo in April 1998 which has yielded the feature film, Misery Harbour. There is emerging co-operation within performing arts, where the world premiere of PPS Danse's Strata took place at the Ultima Festival in Oslo in November 2001. Norway is a member of the International Network on Cultural Policy, a Canadian initiative, which provides culture ministers with an international forum through which to discuss emerging cultural policy issues.

Areas of common interest between Canada & Norway include:

    Antipersonnel landmines
    Human Security Network
    Barents Euro-Arctic Council
    Arctic Council
    OSCE

There was also the Canadian Alumni Club of Norway which is a club for alumni of Canadian education institutions which has now become a chapter of the Canadian-Norwegian Business Association, and the Canadian Club of Western Norway.
