"PIEL" (skin in English) is a joint exhibit by seven Canadian and six Chilean visual artists currently exhibiting at the Museum of Contemporary Art in the city of Valdivia. It aims to promote artistic exchange and stimulate dialogue - which is at the base of every creation- through works created in situ by some artists completing a residency in Valdivia, and through the exhibition of works by other artists that are unable to be present.

All the participants have developed professional reputations, both in their own countries and internationally. The seven Canadian artists are: Guy Blackburn, Marion Bordier, Audrey Churgin (in collaboration with Ron Snapp, from the United States), Natalie Lavoie, Miguel Angel Berlanga, José Mansilla-Miranda, and Cecile Boucher. (The latter two will be present in Valdivia.) The six Chileans artists are: Mónica Bengoa, Roberto Farriol, Beatriz Leyton, Paola Vezzani, Jaun Mayor and Alejandra Wolf.

The exhibition will be on display on the first floor of the MAC (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Valdivia, and will remain open to the public until late April 2006. This project deepens the relationships established between Canadian and Chilean artists, by continuing the exploration initiated by Guy Blackburn, Marion Bordier and José Mansilla-Miranda. They - as well as the other foreign participating artists - have all previously exhibited in other important venues in Chile such as the MAC of Santiago, the Matucana 100 Centre, the Extension Centre of the Catholic University of Chile, and the Animal Gallery.

"Piel" is a reflection from the concrete to the meeting point and to the different points that every human being possesses. An exploration of the identity signs that can unite or confront the globalized world, which like never before, is in confrontation with diversity from the yearn for equality. The thirteen artists confront and face from different perspectives and idiosyncrasies the secular topic of "the skin". They infuse the museum space (where the former Anwandter brewery was located) which receives this new proposal from Canada and Chile, the two extremes of the planet, the two poles, the north and the south.

This initiative is sponsored by the Art School of the Faculty of Art of the Catholic University of Chile, by the Canadian Embassy in Chile, and by the Art Council of Canada and the Art and Literature Council of Quebec.
