Voting While Abroad

Can I still vote if I am away from my riding?
How can I register to vote?
How can I get more information?

Q: Can I still vote if I am away from my riding?

A: Canadians can, under certain conditions, vote in federal elections, by-elections and referendums when they are temporarily living or travelling outside Canada.

Canadian citizens may vote by special mail-in ballot, if they:

  • are 18 years old on polling day, and
  • have a primary residence in Canada, but are away from their electoral districts during the electoral period, or
  • have resided outside Canada for less than five consecutive years, or longer if they meet certain employment-based criteria for exemption from the five-year limit

Q: How can I register to vote?

A: The application form and information on how to register and vote by special mail-in ballot are available on Elections Canada’s Web site or from any Canadian embassy, high commission or consular office.

IMPORTANT

The registration form must reach Elections Canada in Ottawa by 6:00 p.m. on January 17, 2006, the Tuesday before polling day. The earlier you send it, the better.

Your registration will be promptly processed, but you must allow enough time for a special ballot voting kit to reach you and for your ballot to travel back to Ottawa. The completed ballot must arrive at Elections Canada by 6:00 p.m., Ottawa time, on polling day, January 23, 2006. By law, late ballots cannot be counted.
