Ecofilms
June 20-25:
Canadian participation at the Ecofilms environmental film festival in Rhodes includes a photo exhibition entitled "Eden: The Marshlands of Iraq" which presents a cooperative project between Canadian and Iraqi government, non-government and university partners for the restoration of the marshlands of Southern Iraq. The exhibition in Greece is a result of the joint collaboration between the MedWet Coordination Unit, the Canada Iraq Marshlands Initiative, Ecofilms and the Canadian Embassy. The Canadian documentary "Surreal" by Erez Yanuv Barzilay will also have its world premiere at Ecofilms Film Festival.

The 2006 Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research will take place in Athens on Sunday, June 4, 2006 at 5 p.m. at Syngrou Estate, 182 Kifissias, Maroussi. All money raised will go to cancer research at Saint Savvas Cancer Hospital in Athens. ...more (PDF 1.9MB)

Paraskevas TerezakisMay 28-30: The Greek Choreographers festival in Athens welcomes Greek-Canadian choreographer Paraskevas Terezakis who returns to his native Greece with Kinesis Dance to present the world premiere of his latest work "… and Speaking of Orestes" at the Argo Theatre in Athens. Kinesis Dance soma theatro is a Vancouver-based company, created in 1986, that explores the human condition through dance and physical theatre. Program details...

3rd Thessaloniki Book FairMay 25-28: The Canadian Embassy, in collaboration with Foreign Affairs Canada, Canada Council for the Arts and the Association for the Export of Canadian Books, will be participating at the 3rd Thessaloniki Book Fair with a stand of 200 Canadian titles of all genres.

WintonickPeter Wintonick producer, director, critic and editor of independent film, video and new media is the winner of the 2006 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Canada will host the first meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol in Montreal, November 28 - December 9, 2005, held in conjunction with the eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention. CANADIANS HONOURED IN GREECE IN 2005
Professor Jacques Bouchard, Director of Hellenic Studies at l'Université de Montréal, was awarded with the Officer of the Order of Honour by the President of the Hellenic Republic in recognition of his contribution to the teaching of modern Greek literature, language and history abroad. Professor Bouchard is a founding member of the Hellenic Studies Centre in Montreal, a writer and translator, a member of the Royal Academy of Canada and a member of the European Centre for the Translation of Literature and Human Science. Professor Bouchard, together with fifteen other academics, novelists and personalities who were responsible for the success of the 2004 Olympic Games, was decorated by the President of the Hellenic Republic during a special ceremony held at the Presidential Residence in Athens on Tuesday, January 18, 2005.

Dr. Eleftherios Diamandis, Professor, Dept. Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology and Senior Researcher, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto was made a Member of the Academy of the University of Athens. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, April 5th, 2005 during which he was admitted by the President of the Academy, Professor Emmanuel Roukounas. Dr. Diamandis' work was presented by Academy Member, Professor Themistoclis Hatzioannou. At the ceremony, Dr. Diamandis also gave a lecture, entitled: "30 Years of Science and Medicine. Dr. Diamandis has also won a prestigious award from the American Association of Clinical Chemistry. He was named the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area of Research. This is the highest research award given by the association.

Terry Fox RunSECOND TERRY FOX RUN IN ATHENS RAISES OVER 18,000 EURO FOR CANCER RESEARCH
The 2nd Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research which took place at Syngrou Estate in Maroussi on Sunday, April 3 was a great success. More than 500 people of all ages participated in an event that raised over 18,000 EURO for cancer research at the Centre for Immunology and Immunotherapy at St. Savvas Cancer Hospital in Athens. This amount raised this year is more than double the amount raised in the 1st Terry Fox Run. Working with the local community, the Canadian Embassy is proud to celebrate Terry’s legacy and help keep his dream of a cure for cancer alive.
