Come to Germany
Germany wears its riches well: elegant big-city charm, pagan-inspired harvest
festivals, a wealth of art and culture and the perennial pleasures of huge tracts
of forest are all there for the enjoying. But Germany's history, both recent
and still in the making, weighs heavily. No visitor will remain untouched by
this country's complex past and the way it affects the nation today.
Berlin, the nation's capital, has many different attractions and is changing
constantly. Hamburg is Germany's main harbour town. Munich on the other hand
is famous for its many baroque buildings, the beer festival and English Garden
with its unique atmosphere in summer. Cologne is situated on the Rhine river
- it is home to one of the biggest cathedrals in the world. Frankfurt is a major
Europeam business centre and the seat of the European Central Bank - no other
European city has such impressive high-rises.
The Federal Republic of Germany consists of 16 states: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria,
Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western
Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt,
Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. Each state has many attractions for visitors
from abroad. Visit Germany's official tourism site: Germany-Tourism.
