MINISTER MACKAY TO SPEAK ABOUT THE CANADIAN LEADERSHIP IN AFGHANISTAN

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, will address members of the Canadian International Council regarding Canadian leadership in Afghanistan on October 19, 2006.

The address will allow Minister MacKay to expand on Canada’s contribution in assisting Afghanistan on the path to stability, good governance and economic development. Canada’s continued engagement is critical in achieving the goals of the Afghan Compact.

Media representatives who wish to cover the event must contact the Foreign Affairs Media Relations Office at 613-995-1874 by 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, to confirm their participation.

Confirmed media are requested to present themselves at least 30 minutes prior to the event with the following accreditation criteria:

          1.       Media accreditation from the Parliamentary Press Gallery or any provincial legislature. Temporary Press Gallery accreditation holders will be required to register with the Foreign Affairs Media Relations Office at 613-995-1874.

          2.       In the absence of suitable gallery accreditation, an assignment letter from the responsible editor at the media outlet must be faxed to the Foreign Affairs Media Relations Office at 613-995-1405 by 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, October 18, 2006. Only applications from known media outlets as listed in commercial media directories will be accepted.

Media are required to present one piece of photo identification at registration.
