Canada - Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) Free Trade Discussions
|
|
Discussions towards the negotiation of a possible Canada-CARICOM free trade
agreement were announced at the Canada-CARICOM Summit on January
19, 2001, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
As a part of these discussions, the Minister for International Trade launched extensive domestic consultations with business, citizen-based organizations and individual Canadians, as well as with the provincial and territorial governments, to obtain advice and views on priorities, objectives and concerns to help define the possible scope of this initiative. (For more information, see the News Release and the Canada Gazette Notice of
December 15, 2001.)
Status of the Discussions
Canadian and CARICOM officials have met on four occasions to identify
issue-areas that could be pursued in a possible future negotiation.
The latest meeting was held in March 2005, in Barbados. No date
has been identified for the next meeting.
A free trade agreement with CARICOM would strengthen Canada's trade and political
ties with the region's economies, and contribute to the shared goal
of deepening economic integration within the Hemisphere.
