Two new judges appointed to Provincial Court of Alberta

Edmonton... Mr. Larry Anderson, QC and Mr. John Bascom, QC have been appointed as judges to the Provincial Court of Alberta effective October 26. Mr. Anderson will sit in Edmonton and Mr. Bascom in Calgary.

"I'm pleased to welcome these two distinguished individuals to the judiciary of the Provincial Court of Alberta. With their collective commitment to the principles of law and their years of experience they will serve Albertans well as they take on their new roles," said Ron Stevens, Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

Larry G. Anderson, QC is appointed to Edmonton Provincial Court, where he will serve the Criminal Division as well as the Family and Youth Division. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1981 and was called to the Bar in 1982. He is currently a partner in the Edmonton law firm of Anderson, Dawson, Knisely, Stevens & Shaigec. He has argued cases at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He is a past President and Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta and is active in various community and civic activities.

John D. Bascom, QC, is appointed to Calgary Provincial Court, Criminal Division. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1975 and is a founding member of the Bascom & Dunn law firm of Calgary. His practice has focused extensively on criminal law and he has appeared in courts across western Canada as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. He is also a former Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta.

The Alberta Judicial Council screens all candidates for Provincial Court appointments and forwards a list of recommended applicants to the Provincial Court Nominating Committee. The Judicial Council has representatives from the Alberta Provincial Court, Court of Queen's Bench, Court of Appeal and the Law Society of Alberta. It also includes two people appointed by the Minister of Justice.

The Provincial Court Nominating Committee then interviews a number of candidates from the list provided by the Judicial Council and provides the Minister of Justice with the names of those appointees felt to be of the highest calibre.

The Provincial Court Nominating Committee was established in 1999 and is made up of 11 members appointed by the Minister of Justice. It has representatives from the Alberta Provincial Court, the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch), other members from the legal profession, and the public.

Judicial appointments are approved by Order in Council.
