In 1951, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) came into being and an agreement was signed conferring on it the status of UN specialized agency. With its 185 members - 179 states and 6 territories - the WMO acts as the UN system's scientific mouthpiece for all atmospheric and climatic issues affecting our planet. WMO's mission is to facilitate global co-operation in meteorological observation and services, to promote expeditious exchanges of meteorological information and standardization in meteorological observations, and to ensure publication of observation data and corresponding statistics. From weather forecasts to air pollution research, from studies of climate changes and the thinning of the ozone layer to forecasting tropical storms, WMO co-ordinates international scientific activities that help provide, more and more quickly, meteorological information and various services of constantly improving quality. The Meteorological Service of Canada represents Canada to the WMO.
