Greenbelt Protection

Ontarians need greenspace because it improves quality of life.

The Greenbelt is key to permanently protecting greenspace and containing urban sprawl in the Golden Horseshoe.

Building on the advice of the Greenbelt Task Force, and guided by thousands of comments and submissions from municipalities, more than 175 organizations and numerous individuals, the Government of Ontario has developed a Greenbelt Plan.

    The Greenbelt Act, 2005 enables the creation of a Greenbelt Plan to protect about 1.8 million acres of environmentally sensitive and agricultural land in the Golden Horseshoe from urban development and sprawl.
