Affordable Housing

The Ontario government has made affordable housing a priority.  Through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program, new homes are being created for low-income families, senior citizens, persons living with mental illness, and victims of domestic violence.

Together with our municipal partners and federal partner, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, we have made the following progress to date for 130 affordable housing projects representing 6,572 units.

  • Rental and Supportive – 119 projects (5,488 units)
    • 2,341 units are occupied.
    • 2,167 units are under construction.
    • 980 units are in planning approvals.
  • Homeownership – 7 projects (884 units)
    • 356 units are occupied.
    • 204 units are under construction.
    • 324 units are in planning approvals.
  • Northern Housing Component – 4 phases (200 units)
    • 3 phases (178 units) are occupied.
    • 1 phase (22 units) is under construction.

Under the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement, Ontario is committing at least $301 million.  The total investment of more than $734 million includes funding from federal and municipal partners.  This will fund 15,000 new units of affordable housing, including 500 affordable units for victims of domestic violence and 700 affordable units for persons living with mental illness.  $80 million will be directed to the creation of 5,000 housing allowances leading to a total affordable housing commitment of 20,000 units.
