Discours prononcé par M. Michael Kergin, ambassadeur du Canada aux États-Unis, à l'occasion de la fête du CanadaWashington (D.C.), le 1er juillet 2001Welcome to the Canadian Embassy. Bienvenue à l'ambassade du Canada. Thank you for joining us today, in the heart of Washington, D.C., to celebrate the spirit of Canada! As Canadians, we share a heritage that is as diverse and magnificent as our landscape. Whatever cultural roots we have inherited as individuals, we are part of a society recognized around the world for our tolerance, our bilingual and multicultural character, our commitment to democratic values, and our quality of life. We are justly proud of the nation we have built together over the past 134 years. Like other nations, we have our cherished national symbols and our great monuments. But our greatest national treasures are the people and places of our vast and wonderful land. Since the earliest days of our nation's history, Canada has been a land of promise. We have built a society that celebrates achievement and excellence while, at the same time, maintaining a strong sense of compassion and respect for human rights. Ultimately, our strength as a country is drawn from our belief in the importance of community and the ability of citizens to live and work together in harmony. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the more than 70 volunteers who have given their time over the past months to make today's celebrations possible -- in particular, Major Deb Turner from the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff, Terry Colli, from the Embassy's Public Affairs Section, the members of the Canadian Club of Washington, D.C. and the Embassy maintenance staff labouring in the hot sun to decorate our building in such a patriotic manner. I invite each of you to be part of today's celebrations. Have fun. Take part in the festivities. Vive le Canada! |
