Language Industry Program

Eligibility Criteria

Language industry companies (translation and interpretation, language technology, and language training firms) all are recipients eligible under this program.

Eligible recipients include:

• incorporated companies, partnerships, solely owned enterprises

Those who are not eligible include:

• non profit organizations, self-employed persons and public sector companies.

Deadlines

Applicants must forward their document to Industry Canada on the dates indicated below. In the event of a delay, the request will be analyzed at the following selection committee meeting. One should foresee approximately 60 days between the deadline and the signature of the letter of agreement.

Eligible Activities

Activities which, in the opinion of the Minister, contribute to the goals of the Program, including:

• marketing initiatives and those intended to enhance corporate identity of the industry in Canada and abroad;
• participation to trade fairs and trade missions.

Summary

What costs are eligible?

Eligible costs are costs incurred by eligible recipients and which, in the opinion of the Minister, are reasonable and necessary for the performance of eligible activities with which they are associated. Among other things, these costs may include:

• transportation, accommodation, conference or registration fees;
• the rental of space in a trade fair and for setting up meetings with prospective clients;
• administrative costs such as photocopying and communication costs;
• editorial and printing costs for information products;
• translation costs for work not performed by the company itself.

What is the maximum contribution per project?

• Government support under LIP can be no more than 50 % of the eligible costs, up to a total of $10 000 per project.
• Cumulative assistance: Government assistance as a whole (federal, provincial, municipal) cannot exceed 75% of eligible costs under LIP.

Are contributions repayable?

Contributions generally will not be repayable under this program. However, they may be under certain conditions. Generally speaking, contributions toward projects undertaken to generate profits for program recipients are repayable.
