Loss of Belongings

Before you leave Canada, you should photocopy the identification page of your passport, and prepare a list of the numbers of all your cards and travel documents. Carry this information separate from the actual documents, and leave a copy with a family member. This section provides useful information in case these personal belongings are lost or stolen.

Note: If someone is arrested for the robbery, you will be required to assist the police in identification and in future court hearings. As in Canada, court procedures in other countries can be prolonged.

Passports

If your passport is lost or stolen, you must obtain a police report and submit the report along with:

· a completed passport application form (available at the nearest Canadian government office abroad
· two passport-sized photos;
· the appropriate fee
· documentary proof of Canadian citizenship (your birth or citizenship certificate); and
·

a "Statutory Declaration concerning a Lost, Stolen, Inaccessible, or Destroyed Canadian Passport or Travel Document" (available at any Canadian government office abroad) to the nearest Passport Office.

Visit the Passport Canada Web site for more information.

Credit Cards and Other Usable Cards

Cancel credit cards, phone cards, debit cards and other usable cards as soon as possible to prevent further loss. Notify the company that issued any lost traveller's cheques.

Notify the other person if any missing card is a joint one.

Obtain a police report. This will be required to have your passport replaced and may be necessary if your credit cards are misused before they are cancelled.

Make arrangements for a financial transfer from your bank using commercial facilities. If this is not possible, the nearest Canadian government office abroad can assist you. Further information is available in the Financial Assistance section.

Government-Issued Documents

Most government-issued documents (e.g. driver's licence, birth certificate, health card, social insurance) can only be replaced in Canada. Information on how to replace these documents upon your return can be found in the Identification Cards section of the Government of Canada Web site.

Other Documents

If a plane ticket is lost or stolen, contact the airline immediately for a replacement.

If other tickets are lost or stolen, contact the issuing office as soon as possible to see what they can do to help. Notify your insurance agent concerning insured items.
