MCINTYRE CREEK LAND USE CONSULTATION EXTENDED

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government has extended the term of the public consultation on the proposed land uses for the McIntyre Creek area of Whitehorse.

The decision to extend the consultation was made in response to a request from citizens concerned that the timelines were insufficient to capture all the comments and to allow more time to meet with representative organizations such as the Porter Creek Community Association, the Contractors Association and others.

"During the first phase of the consultation, we received less than one hundred comments from the public," said Eric Magnuson, ADM of Community Services. "We believed this was an important issue for many residents in the area, but only a small percentage participated in the consultations. Some residents requested that the consultation be extended and we have agreed to an extension to encourage more input from the public and other key stakeholders."

There have been conflicting views on how the land should be used dating back to the 1990s when a park was first suggested for the McIntyre Creek area. Subsequently there have been discussions for some of the land to be used as endowment lands for Yukon College, and the City of Whitehorse's Official Community Plan designates a portion of this land as urban residential.

The City of Whitehorse carried out extensive consultation on the proposed Porter Creek Phase D residential development and has also sponsored public meetings in partnership with CMHC towards an increased understanding of the principles of sustainable community development.

A map of the McIntyre Creek area and surrounding land has been created so that residents can see the various interests represented by the College, Kwanlin Dun and Ta'an First Nations and the City of Whitehorse.

The public is encouraged to provide their views via the government website, email, letter correspondence or at the public meetings noted below. Specific associations and related organizations will also be contacted to arrange meetings so that they too may contribute to this land use consultation.

Public meetings will be held:

- Wednesday, May 24, 5 – 8 p.m.  Whitehorse Elementary School Gym
- Monday, June 5, 5 – 8 p.m.   Jack Hulland Elementary School Gym
- Wednesday, June 7, 5 – 8 p.m.  Takhini Elementary School
