Motor Vehicles and Driver Licences

Motor Vehicles supports the safety of the driving public by administering the Motor Vehicles Act (PDF 2.4MB). The unit is responsible for all driver licensing and vehicle registration in the Yukon. These services are provided through the main Motor Vehicles office in Whitehorse.

Territorial Agents offer these services through the Yukon Liquor Corporation in the communities of Dawson City, Faro, Haines Junction, Watson Lake, and Mayo.

Territorial Representatives provide services through Yukon Housing Corporation in Carcross, Carmacks, Ross River, and Teslin.

Driver testing is available in Whitehorse and every six weeks in the rural communities (except for Old Crow, where driver testing is available on an on-going basis from the RCMP).

Motor Vehicles offers several publications free of charge. Some of them are available as downloads in PDF or Word format. All of them are available in hardcopy at any of the Motor Vehicles offices.

The Driver's Basic Handbook for Cars and Light Trucks (PDF 1.9MB) contains a number of relevant instructions on how to safely operate a private motor vehicle. It includes information on how to obtain a licence, traffic control devices, basic driving skills, turns and intersections, lane driving, how to share the road, emergency driving tips, registration and insurance information, towing a trailer as well as how to be a responsible driver abiding by the law.

The Airbrake Manual (PDF 2.7MB) color illustrations on air brake components makes this publication one of Canada's most popular instructional tools on air brake knowledge. This book will show you about brakes and breaking, components, how the system works, trailer systems, duel air systems, and how to perform a pre-trip inspection.

You're Behind the Wheel Now (PDF 112KB)is the Graduated Driver Licensing brochure for new Yukon drivers. It goes hand in hand with the Driver's Basic Handbook and explains the process, restrictions, and conditions on how to enter as a new learner and leave as a trained novice driver.

Taking Your Medical Condition into Account (PDF 134KB) explains how your medical condition may affect your ability to hold a Yukon driver's licence. Also available in French (Votre état de santé importe) (PDF 134KB), it provides information about how decisions are made about your ability to drive safely, the appeal process and contact information. A form is included to authorize the release of information about your medical condition.
