Primary Health Care Transition Fund

More than 100 Yukon residents came together in Whitehorse on May 26 and 27, 2003 to discuss ways to improve health care for the Yukon. Representatives from Yukon communities, First Nations, service agencies, social and health professionals spent the two days coming up with a list of 600 recommendations that could improve the make improvements to the Yukon's primary health care system over the long term.

Participants heard from a variety of speakers – all individuals who work in a particular area of primary health care. They heard ideas on improving health promotion, disease and injury prevention and chronic disease management from First Nation elder Agnes Mills, Kevin Barr from the Committee on Abuse In Residential Schools (CAIRS), and Sue Meikle, Active Living Consultant. Jon Breen, of Yukon Council on Disability, Linda Van Pelt, Community Health Nurse, and Marny Ryder, Chair of the Yukon Hospital Corporation, spoke on working together. All spoke about the successes they have had from a variety of perspectives, in the context of primary health care.
