Road Safety

The Department of Highways and Public Works's Transport Services branch is responsible for road safety in the Yukon. The branch oversees carrier compliance through the Weigh Stations, Motor Transport Board and National Safety Code.

National Road Safety Vision 2010

The Yukon is a member of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, which is a national governing body of all Canadian jurisdictions for motor vehicle issues. This body has, in conjunction with Transport Canada and other stakeholders, approved a new road safety strategy for Canada called Road Safety Vision. Its goal is to have the world's safest highways by 2010.

The strategy encourages all jurisdictions to re-evaluate their driving violation laws, especially the laws meant to control the most dangerous driving actions including speeding, seatbelt use and intersection violations, like running red lights. The RCMP has adopted these three priorities as well.

The Yukon government has introduced a number of initiatives in response, including the Graduated Drivers' Licencing Program, increased motor vehicle ticket fines and demerit points, and the Alcohol Interlock Ignition Program. The goal is to reduce fatalities and injuries on Yukon roads.
