YUKON AIR TRAVEL COMMITTEE ISSUES DIRECTION TO GOVERNMENT

WHITEHORSE - The Air Travel Committee notified the Yukon government today of its decision that a portion of Air Canada’s additional summer flight capacity harmed competition between airlines in the territory. The Committee's decision is based on its research on airline activities that took place in May, June and July of 2002. GOVERNMENT AWARDS $600,000 PLUS IN HIGHWAY CONTRACTS

WHITEHORSE –Approximately $600,000 in highway contracts have been awarded to Yukon companies, who will put more than twenty-five people to work on these projects in September. "We have awarded more than $34 million for highway construction and maintenance projects this year," Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent said. REVISION OF ALASKA HIGHWAY AT CHAMPAGNE OFFICIALLY OPENED

WHITEHORSE – The revised section of the Alaska Highway near Champagne was officially opened today. Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent and Community Services Minister Pam Buckway officially opened the revised section of the highway Tuesday afternoon. The highway construction work consists of a 16-kilometre relocation of the highway starting at the Mendenhall River and rejoining the old highway approximately five kilometres past the village of Champagne. WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government is installing rest stops in the Teslin and Braeburn areas for the travelling public. These stops will offer scenic viewing and increased road safety. Read more...

WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government has awarded more than $600,000 for highway contracts that will employ more than 40 people during the month of August. "The benefits of highway construction and maintenance far outweigh the unavoidable delays for the traveling public," Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent said. "It supports many Yukon-based companies and their employees, and the end result is, of course, jobs and better roads." Read more...

WHITEHORSE – Projects in Dawson City, Destruction Bay, Haines Junction, Tagish and Whitehorse have been approved for funding under the Rural Road Upgrading Program (RRUP). The projects total more than $200,000.  "These projects are the result of requests and input from rural residents," Infrastructure Minister Scott Kent said. "This program continues to create jobs by putting local people to work on projects that benefit the infrastructure of their communities." Read more...

WHITEHORSE – A program that will prevent a vehicle from being started when the driver has been drinking is being introduced in the Yukon this September. The Alcohol Ignition Interlock program will allow people who have lost their driver’s licences through impaired driving convictions to gain conditional driving privileges by using the device.
