School-Based Prevention

There are several means by which Prevention Services supports alcohol and drug education provided by the Department of Education in the schools.

Alcohol and drug education kits

These kits are designed to provide teachers and other professionals with grade-appropriate resources for substance abuse education. Six kits are available for loan. These include:

  • Kindergarten – Grade 1
  • Grade 2 - Grade 3
  • Grade 4 – Grade 5
  • Grade 6 – Grade 7
  • Grade 8 – Grade 9
  • Grade 10 – 11 -12

Each kit includes age-appropriate videos, games, lesson plan ideas and background research materials.

In addition to using these kits in a school setting, these kits can also be used for community presentations to children or youth. Allied professionals can borrow the kits by calling 667-5405 or toll free 1-800-661-0408 ext. 5405.

School presentations

Prevention Consultants deliver alcohol and drug education presentations in the schools. These presentations may be in the Career and Personal Planning classes or in any other subject setting where the teacher would like to focus on prevention or awareness of addictions issues. Presentations are delivered on an as requested basis and are based on the availability of the Prevention Consultants. If presentations are requested from the High Schools in Whitehorse, requests are coordinated with the Youth Addiction Counsellor from Alcohol and Drug Services.

Youth Addiction Counsellors from Treatment Services at Alcohol and Drug Services provide services in the schools.
