SOUTH KLONDIKE LOCAL ADVISORY AREA APPROVED
CARCROSS - Residents from Lewes Lake to Carcross to Crag Lake will hold elections in October for the newly created South Klondike Local Advisory Council.
"The South Klondike advisory area will have an inclusive voice," Community Services Minister Glenn Hart said. "The best plans, and ultimately the best outcomes, occur when the local area residents have an effective voice that can provide the community’s views."
Elections will be held in concert with the regular municipal election cycle on October 19. The new LAC will be fully elected and comprised of five members. The council will consist of three elected members, each representing one of three wards, together with two members who will be elected as at-large representatives.
"The formation of this Local Advisory Council is the result of many years of effort by Carcross area citizens," Patrick Rouble, MLA for Southern Lakes, said. "I am pleased to have had the opportunity to work with the community in support of this very important initiative."
The council will be able to work with the two governments in the area, Yukon and Carcross-Tagish First Nation, to ensure that Carcross develops in a locally appropriate manner.
"This new LAC is our chance at a fresh start," said Linda Pringle, a member of the steering committee that led the process for creating the South Klondike LAC. "It’s time for all Carcross residents to stand together and work for a better community. This LAC is just one more way we can make that happen."
Local advisory councils do not have taxing, spending or bylaw-making authority, and are strictly advisory in their role. There is no impact on the Carcross Tagish First Nation Agreements and Yukon remains fully committed to honouring those Agreements.
The new LAC replaces the Carcross Area Advisory Planning Committee, which folded in the spring.
