FUNDING PROVIDED TO FIVE FUTURE DOCTORS

WHITEHORSE - Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers today announced the names of the five Yukon students who will receive the Yukon Medical Education Bursary to help pay the costs of medical school.

"I am very pleased to announce the five individuals who will receive the support of this government as they begin or continue their medical studies. These are all Yukoners who have chosen medicine as a career and we are very proud to be able to support them in their goal," Cathers said.

Two students entering their first year of medical school, Tyler MacGregor and Aedes Scheer, will receive $10,000 for each of the next four years.  MacGregor will be attending Laurentian/Lakehead University Northern Ontario School of Medicine, while Scheer will be attending the University of British Columbia.

Jennifer Racz who is currently entering her third year of medical school at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, will be funded for each of the next two years, at $10,000 per year. University of British Columbia student Luke Pugh will also receive $10,000 for his fourth year at medical school while Ben Lewis, currently at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, has been approved for a residency bursary, of $15,000 per year. Lewis is entering his first year of Family Medicine residency.

The four successful applicants who are now in or entering medical school are eligible for the residency bursary if they take their residency in Family Medicine.

"We look forward to welcoming these Yukoners back as family physicians once they have completed their studies," Cathers said.
