Resource locations and properties are provided and local and export markets reviewed. Coal use is also compared to other regions and to other methods of electricity generation. Yukon Hydro Resources This article provides an overview of the Yukon's hydro resources and associated economic, regulatory, and environmental issues. Yukon hydrology, current utilities, and potential development are explored, along with issues surrounding market potential, competition and stability. Environmental impacts on fish and wetlands are also addressed. Yukon Wind Resources This article provides an overview of the Yukon's wind resources and associated economic, regulatory, and environmental issues. Emphasis is on current wind energy developments in the Yukon are described. A discussion on rime icing is included under economic issues. Yukon Wood Resources This article provides an overview of the Yukon's wood resources and associated economic, regulatory, and environmental issues. Wood chip and pellet uses are explored. A comparison of wood to other electricity generation options is provided. Yukon Alternative Energy This article provides an overview of the Yukon's alternative energy resources and associated economic, regulatory, and environmental issues. Solar, geothermal, and refuse-derived energy systems are explored. Economic Development from Renewable Energy (PDF 118kb) This discussion paper outlines aspects of introducing renewable energy technologies into the mainstream Yukon economy. Technologies, their resource potential in the Yukon, and the economic, social, and environmental benefits of renewable energy are described. The paper features case studies of renewable energy use that point to potential applications in the Yukon and offers a selection of key actions for implementing renewable energy, focusing on overcoming typical energy market barriers.
