As part of its mandate, the Women's Directorate undertakes many public information campaigns dealing with violence against women. To understand the impact and value of these campaigns, the Directorate needs baseline information in order to effectively target future campaigns. The Directorate commissioned a Family Violence Survey during the winter of 2001-02, to find out what Yukoners think and how they feel about family violence. The survey is presented here; the final report is entitled Attitudes Towards Family Violence: A survey of adults in the Yukon.

A Cappella North

A Cappella North 2 - Bulletins

A Cappella North 2 (ACN2) is the name of a study conducted in late 2001 on behalf of the Government of Yukon Women’s Directorate and the Department of Education. It expands on two previous surveys: A Cappella 1991, a national study and A Cappella North 1995, a Yukon-based study. While both of these surveys explored the lives of young women, ACN2 broadened its mandate to study young men, as well.

To help us understand the attitudes, beliefs and priorities of young people in the Yukon, we asked questions ranging from how much time they spend on the Internet and what kind of music they enjoy through to their reasons for disagreeing with parents, their sense of safety at school, and the degree to which they feel treated as an equal by the opposite sex.

The answers to the survey questions are being released in a series of bulletins anchored to different themes. We hope the information will help enhance policy and program development, educate youth and parents, and inform Yukoners about the young people in the territory.

Final Report: Yukon Curriculum Review on Gender Bias

One of the actions taken in response to the A Cappella North report was for the Women's Directorate to provide a gender equity review of Yukon curriculum materials. This report is the result of that review. The project concentrated on a sampling of curriculum materials from K-12. It gives a taste of which materials are biased and which ones are not, and the principles for determining this can be used by any teacher when selecting materials for the class. Available through the Women's Directorate.
