Policing Review

Background Information

On October 15, 2003, Federal Solicitor General Wayne Easter announced that the Government of Canada has committed additional funding of $1.3 million a year for two years to develop policing initiatives in the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut.

Yukon Justice proposes to use the $100,000 provided by Canada to conduct a Review of the RCMP policing services and costs being provided in the Yukon through the Territorial Police Service Agreement. An independent consultant will conduct the review.

Purpose of Review

The purpose of the Review is

  • to examine the policing services in the Yukon,
  • to identify whether the current policing services are efficient or inefficient,
  • to confirm whether the communities are satisfied with the policing services being delivered in their community,
  • to identify the community's policing needs,
  • to identify police service priorities,
  • to look at options for delivery of police services in the Yukon.

Outcome from Review

The consultant will prepare a report from the questionnaires, stakeholder meetings and community meetings. This report will include recommendations for the policing services.

The Review will assist the Minister and Yukon Justice in setting priorities for the RCMP.

In the fall of 2005, Yukon Justice proposes to use Canada's funding to host a policing conference with Yukon stakeholders to discuss the outcome of the Review.

Once we have a confirmed meeting date with your agency, a questionnaire will be sent to you offering a guide as to the direction of the meeting. We look forward to meeting you in person and discussing your views.
