Yukon Public Libraries Frequently Asked QuestionsThe Yukon Public Library system includes fourteen community and two volunteer branch libraries, as well as the central library in Whitehorse (see Whitehorse Public Library Services).
Yukon identification or other identification showing your Yukon address, such as your Yukon Health Card, gets you a free card which allows you to borrow items from any Yukon public library. New to the Territory? Just passing through? If you do not have Yukon identification, a $10.00 refundable deposit (where applicable) will get you a temporary library card good for a year. Even without a card, come in and enjoy all the facilities we have to offer.
Public Access Catalogue (Search the Catalogue) First stop: the computer terminal where you can see all the titles in the Yukon Public Library system. Search by author, titles, subject and media. The collection at Yukon Public Libraries includes a wide range of materials. Special collections include Yukon Archives, Northern (Yukon, Northern Canada, and circumpolar nations), literacy, French, multilingual, and audio and video cassettes.
Most library material can be borrowed for 28 days. Videos are loaned for 7 days. And don't forget that you can renew library materials simply by calling your local library. Overdue fines are charged at some branches.
Can't find what you are looking for? Just ask! Your local library has access to other libraries in the Yukon, Canada and even the USA through our Interlibrary Loans Service. There is a charge for photocopy requests; otherwise the service is free. Be prepared to wait; often it takes up to 8 weeks for out of territory items.
Public Internet Access is available at all fourteen community libraires plus Whitehorse Public Library. For more information just click on the library of your choice. You will need to sign a user agreement to use the computer, and book ahead for the time period of your choosing.
We are here to help answer your questions! Just ask - and your librarian can help you search the many information sources available. The Whitehorse Public Library reference desk can be reached at (867) 667-3668.
Self-service copiers are available in most community libraries at a cost of $0.16 per page, including G.S.T.
Additional Information With the exception of Whitehorse, the operations of the community libraries are handled by local volunteer boards. In Whitehorse, the Whitehorse Public Library Board is appointed by the Minister of Community Services to provide public input into the operations of the library. Public Library Services coordinates programs and services for boards and libraries throughout the Territory, including centralized cataloguing, reference, interlibrary loans, training and public programs, as well as consultative services and promotional activities. Regular bi-weekly columns appear in the Friday edition of the Yukon News. Book reviews are aired weekly on CBC Yukon on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. For more information, contact the Manager of Public Libraries, (867) 667-5447, or send an email to whitehorse.library@gov.yk.ca. |
