BACKGROUND

The Yukon is situated on the periphery of several prolific oil and gas producing regions. Alberta and British Columbia are to the south, the Northwest Territories to the east and Alaska to the west. Today the Yukon remains unexplored and its potential untapped, offering distinct opportunities.

In 1998 the Government of Yukon assumed responsibility for its oil and gas resources with the intent of facilitating and fostering new oil and gas activity throughout the territory. To accomplish this, the government established a competitive regulatory and fiscal regime managed by the Oil and Gas Management branch and the Oil and Gas Business Development/Pipeline branch.

The Oil and Gas Management branch is responsible for managing Yukon’s oil and gas resources and regulating oil and gas facilities and operations. This work entails issuing and managing rights and licensing new activities.

The Oil and Gas Business Development/Pipeline branch promotes and facilitates oil and gas and pipeline development in the Yukon, and also manages Yukon's interest in Offshore Beaufort Sea oil and gas development.
