Great Opportunities in Poland for Canadian Companies

With a large domestic market of nearly 40 million inhabitants, Poland is the 6th most populous country in the expanded European Union. And with GDP growth in both 2004 and 2005 projected to be in the 5% range, the country has one of the fastest growing economies in all of Europe. Poland's membership in the European Union, which took effect on May 1, 2004, will have an increasingly positive impact in terms of harmonizing administrative and regulatory systems with those in place in the EU, and in providing access to significant amounts of EU Transitional Funds, especially in the areas of infrastructure development and agricultural reform. Poland's central location gives it good access to all regions of Europe. All of these factors favour an increased Canadian commercial presence in Poland.

Poland is Canada's 15th largest export destination in the EU, and it is by far the single largest Canadian export market of the 10 new EU entrants (the other nine being Hungary, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia). Canadian exports to Poland have risen steadily in recent years, and are quickly approaching the $200 million level.

Canadian cumulative investment in Poland totals almost $800 million. Opportunities for trade and investment for Canadian firms exist in the agri-food, environment, ICT, transportation, infrastructure, aerospace, defence, S&T; and energy sectors. Major Canadian firms already active in Poland include McCain Foods, Royal Group Technologies, Wentworth Technologies, Shoppers Drug Mart, SNC Lavalin, Bombardier Transportation, Nortel Networks and Pratt & Whitney Canada which has been active in Poland for nearly 30 years.
