YUKON TO HOST ENERGY & MINES MINISTERS’ CONFERENCE

WHITEHORSE – Energy and Mines Ministers from the Government of Canada, the provinces and the territories along with invited industry members will be arriving in Whitehorse to attend the 63rd Annual Energy & Mines Ministers’ Conference Aug. 27-29.

This annual conference, last hosted in Whitehorse in 1992, will be co-chaired by Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources Canada and Archie Lang, Yukon's Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources.

"This conference provides a forum for the mining and energy industries and associations to share information and expertise with provincial, territorial and federal ministers. We are always looking for effective ways to promote the North's interests on the national agenda, and this is a perfect opportunity to do that where energy and mines are concerned," Lang said.

Representatives of the mining industry and stakeholder groups will dialogue with ministers on a variety of topics including solutions for maintaining the viability of mining communities, funding for geological mapping strategies, taxation improvements and projected labour shortfalls.

Energy ministers will receive expert input from sector associations and discuss energy technology, energy awareness and information, regulatory efficiency and opportunities for collaboration.

Workshops will take place on August 27, energy meetings will be held on August 28, and the mines meeting will be held on August 29. The conference will wrap up after the mines meeting.

Approximately 250 delegates will be in Whitehorse for the conference.
