The talents of Canadian musicians can be heard in all types of music. In the realm of popular music, Bryan Adams, Céline Dion,Sarah McLachlan, Shania Twain, Leonard Cohen, Roch Voisine and Daniel Lavoie are popular with music fans all over the world. On the jazzscene, Montreal's world-renowned annual jazz festival is a must on the itinerary of all jazz fans. Such groups as UZEB have taken theirplace among the world's most celebrated jazz ensembles. Oscar Peterson is considered one of the all-time jazz greats, while others, suchas Lorraine Desmarais, Oliver Jones, Karen Young, Michel Donato, Diana Krall and Ed Bickert, are now building reputations for themselves.In the area of classical music, there are a number of smaller ensembles and a number of Canadian cities have their own symphonyorchestras including Montreal's Symphony Orchestra which has earned an impressive collection of prizes and distinctions.The VancouverOpera Association, the Canadian Opera Company, L'Opéra de Montréal and others are known for the originality and quality oftheir performances. Among classical performers, Glenn Gould is widely regarded as an innovative musical genius. Maureen Forrester, JonVickers and Louis Quilico have also left a rich musical legacy, while artists such as Angela Hewitt, Ofra Harnoy, Louis Lortie and BenHeppner, Gino Quilico, Richard Margison and Judith Forst are extending the tradition with exciting innovations of their own.

Dance


Canada is home to world reknowned ballet companies such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet; the Grands Ballets Canadiens; and the NationalBallet of Canada. They have been the home base and stepping stone to international careers for dancers such as Karen Kain and EvelynHart. Fans of modern dance throughout the world are delighted by the performances of Canadian troupes that include: La La La Human Steps,the Toronto Dance Theatre, Dancemakers, Holy Body Tattoo and O Vertigo. Canada is also home to a wide range of dance styles celebrated infestivals such as the CanAsian Dance Festival, the Fringe Festival of Independent Dance and the Kalanidhi Dance Festival, and companiessuch as Chinook Winds.

Theatre


If all the world is a stage, Canada's role on that stage is prominent and much admired. The compelling nature and high quality ofCanadian theatre is recognized internationally. The Shaw and Stratford Theatre festivals are well known abroad. Quebec theatre has becomeincreasingly popular both at home and abroad in recent years, thanks in good measure to the plays of Michel Tremblay, which have now beentranslated into more than 20 languages. Canadian theatre is distinguished by its innovative spirit and search for new forms. Companiessuch as Carbone 14, UBU, Les Deux Mondes and One Yellow Rabbit tour the world and receive critical acclaim wherever they go. Others, likeGreen Thumb, Le Carrousel, Dynamo Théâtre and Mermaid have channelled their energies into creating outstanding children'stheatre.
