SUPPORT CONTINUES THROUGH LITERACY ACTION COMMITTEE FUNDING
WHITEHORSE – Thanks to continued support from the Government of Yukon, the Literacy Action Committee has disbursed another round of funds to a number of valuable literacy projects, most of which serve people living in Yukon communities.
Approximately $75,000 will be awarded to 17 groups operating literacy initiatives throughout Yukon. The Literacy Action Committee met to consider 23 proposals.
"The Literacy Action Committee plays an important role in funding community literacy programs throughout the territory," alternate Education Minister Elaine Taylor said. "The Government of Yukon is pleased to continue our support of the Literacy Action Committee and the literacy programs it enables."
The funding for the Literacy Action Committee is allocated through the government’s 2001 Yukon Literacy Strategy. To date, 127 literacy projects have received Literacy Action Committee funding in order to increase literacy skills development in the territory.
"Literacy is a priority for the government because we want Yukoners to have access to the training they need to succeed in the work force and in their communities," Taylor said. "There is a real need for literacy programming here in Yukon and through direction from the 2001 Yukon Literacy Strategy, we are allocating funds to where they will be of greatest benefit to all Yukoners."
The next call for Literacy Action Committee funding proposals will be September 2006. Interested individuals and organizations can call the Department of Education at (867) 667-8682 for more information.
