Yukon Women in Trades and Technology Society

WITT LogoIn 2000, Advanced Education assisted in the establishment of the Yukon Women in Trades and Technology society (YWITT).

Since its establishment, Advanced Education has supported YWITT's efforts to bring information and trades experiences to women of all ages. These programs are designed to reduce, and in some cases remove, the barriers to training identified in the Women in Apprenticeship and Trades report.

Current activities of YWITT include:

Young Women Exploring Trades Conferences, an annual event that brings in 120 grade 8 girls from Whitehorse and the communities to experience hands-on trades workshops in a fun and supportive environment.

Women Exploring Trades Courses that give women hands-on experiences in carpentry, electrical, sheet metal and welding and professional painting while they construct a take-home project.

Home Renovations and Repair Weekends. Women have the opportunity to learn some basic home repair skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, dry walling and tiling.

Women Wanna Weld! Weekends. These courses are held at Duncan’s Ltd. and women construct various sheet metal and welding projects that they can take home with them while learning basic metal-working and welding techniques.

Introduction to Silversmithing Courses. These weekends centre around the design and making of silver items.

Car Care Clinics. Sponsored by Canadian Tire Whitehorse, these sessions give women the opportunity to find out about the care and maintenance of their vehicles.

Community Visits. Tradeswomen are traveling to the community schools to present hands-on workshops to girls in grades 5 – 8 in various trades.

For current course offerings, please check www.yukonwitt.org, the web site of Yukon Women in Trades and Technology.

With the support of Advanced Education, YWITT continues to develop and deliver women-only courses that explore the trades.
