STEP Information for Students

PLEASE NOTE: There are five separate employment opportunities described here. Please read carefully! Each has a different application process.

  1. Yukon Territorial Government Positions 

    (Jobs will be posted in late February 2007)

    Here is the information for career related summer job opportunities available in various Government departments this year. The wage rate for these positions is $14.40 per hour. If you are interested in any of these positions, please fill out the application package completely (including the Preference and Skills Form pdf file), and attach resume. PLEASE NOTE: If successful in attaining an interview for any of these positions, a more detailed Job Description and/or Statement of Qualifications is available for your review.     If you are applying for more than one position, please list them in order of preference. Applications must be RECEIVED IN THIS OFFICE NO LATER THAN MARCH 31, 2007 of the current year. Applications received later than this may be put on a waiting list and used in the event that there are not enough suitable applicants for the related position.

    The following is a list of pertinent dates to keep in mind and some information regarding the hiring process and time lines.

    1. Shortlisting: will begin the second week of April of the current year. All applications will be screened and candidates selected for interviews.
    2. Interviews: will take place beginning the second week of April of the current year. If you are unable to attend an interview due to exams, travel etc., we will arrange for phone interviews to take place.
    3. Offer of Intent: successful candidates will be notified on May 1,2 and 3 of the current year with a job offer. You are required to confirm acceptance within the same day.
    4. Employment Start Date:  no positions will commence earlier than the second week in May of the current year.
    5. Documentation:  all documentation and signing for hire will take place at Department of Education, Advanced Ed. Branch beginning May 7 of the current year. All successful candidates are required to take part in this process prior to commencement of employment.

  2. Private Sector Employment Positions (will be posted in late February 2007)

    Private Sector Employment Positions are also on the website for your information. If you are interested in any of these positions, you must APPLY DIRECTLY to the person listed for each employer, at the address given.

    These positions also have a guaranteed work term of a minimum of 12 weeks, and must pay at least $14.40 per hour under the STEP program.

  3. Computer Camp/Youth Exploring Trades Instructor (YET) Positions

  4. These are not STEP positions and you must state clearly on your resume Computer Camp/YET Instructor or both. Your resumes may be submitted to the above address as listed in #1.

  5. Environment Yukon Student Jobs

    These include positions with the Yukon Youth Conservation Corps (Y2C2) and Conservation Action Team (CAT) programs. Check the website for the new Green Team positions. Please apply directly to Environment Yukon or as indicated on their website.

  6. Yukon Geological Survey Summer Employment Opportunities

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for any of the positions in 1 and 2 above, you must be a Yukon Student, as defined as follows:

Yukon Student means an individual who has just completed a semester of full-time under-graduate studies in Yukon or out of Territory and who is returning to full-time under-graduate studies in the fall of the same year; and, who resided in Yukon for two (2) consecutive years immediately prior to the commencement of post-secondary under-graduate studies or who is eligible for the Yukon Post-Secondary Grant;

You must also meet the following criteria:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Not a member of the employer's immediate family
  • Not a member of the immediate family of a direct supervisor
  • A Yukon Resident
  • Possess a valid Yukon Health Care Card.

Please note: The STEP program is for full-time under-graduate Yukon Students ONLY. Yukon students in graduate studies or upgrading are ineligible to apply for STEP positions.
