Student Training Allowance

How Do I Qualify For A Training Allowance?

You are eligible to receive the Training Allowance if you have resided in the Yukon Territory for 24 months immediately prior to your classes commencing.

Are There Any Conditions To Be Met?

Yes, the conditions are:

  • You must be taking studies at Yukon College or an approved human resource development training program within Yukon;
  • You must be attending full-time;
  • Your course has to be at least 3 weeks long;
  • You can not receive the Training Allowance if you are receiving funds for educational studies from other sources other than special scholarships, awards or loans.

What Must Accompany My Training Allowance Application?

We require your final letter of acceptance or your Authorization to Register form from the educational institution and a completed Yukon Student Financial Assistance application form. Download the application below or ask for one from our office.

Is There A Deadline Date For Applications?

Yes, your completed application and accompanying documents must be received no later than 14 school days after your classes start, otherwise, your application will only be approved from the date we received your completed application.

How Do I Find Out If My Training Allowance Application Is Approved?

Once your application has been approved, a letter will be sent to you and the institution you are attending indicating how much you will be receiving.

How Much Will I Receive?

Training Allowance rates are payable as follows:

Student Only $92 per week
Student and 1 dependant $131 per week
Student and 2 dependants $152 per week
Student and 3 dependants $171 per week
Student and 4 dependants $190 per week

A dependant means:

  • A child (natural, adopted or stepchild) under the age of 18 who is not supported by a spouse or other person; and/or
  • A spouse whose income is less than the single student training allowance as outlined above.

Also, if you are required to travel to another community to attend a program not offered in your home community you will receive:

  • $73 per week of your course if you must maintain two residences during your studies, and;
  • A travel allowance for one return trip, between the place where the program is offered and your normal place of residence, at the current government rate per kilometre. For those students who reside in Old Crow, you are eligible to receive one return airfare per academic year.

When Will I Get My Money?

All applications are assessed on a first-come, first-serve basis, so the earlier you get your application in, the earlier your money will reach the institution. Training Allowances are paid every two weeks.

Where Is My Money Sent?

For students attending Ayamdigut Campus you can pick your cheques up at the bookstore. If you are attending a community campus, your cheques will be mailed to the campus.

How Many Years Can I Receive This Allowance?

A student may receive assistant for the Student Training Allowance and Yukon Grant combined for up to a maximum of five years.

Do I Pay Income Tax On The Training Allowance?

Yes, the Allowance is considered income, therefore, the Federal Government requires you to claim the amount received. Please keep Yukon College informed of your current mailing address for T4A forms. For information on education deductions for income tax purposes, please contact Revenue Canada.

Does The Training Allowance Have To Be Paid Back?

If you have been overpaid, for any reason, you must pay back that portion of the Training Allowance, otherwise, no repayment is required.
