Canada was born from the encounter of native peoples and two European nations, the French and the British. It has grown as successive waves of immigrants have come from all parts of the world in search of a better life. Although most Canadians are still of British or French origin, there are large communities with roots in western and central Europe, Asia, Africa and other American countries.

Canada's ethnic and cultural population has become increasingly more diverse over the past 40 years. Canadians are proud that Canada was the first country in the world to adopt a Multiculturalism Policy. In 1999, 89% of Canadians agreed that the multicultural make-up is one of the best things about Canada.

Canada recognizes and values its rich ethnic and racial diversity. The Canadian Multiculturalism Act promotes full and equitable participation of people of origins in Canadian society as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins.

Through multiculturalism, Canada recognizes the potential of all Canadians, encouraging them to integrate into their society and take an active part in its social, cultural, economic and political affairs.
