Canada Leads Run for Cancer Research
Canadian Ambassador Peter Sutherland is inviting everyone to participate in this year's Terry Fox Run, which aims to raise funds for cancer research. Co-organized by the Philippine Cancer Society and the Embassy of Canada, the 2006 Terry Fox Run will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2005, 6:30 am at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex in Pasay City. Starting point will be at Vicente Sotto Street. The 2006 Terry Fox Run is now on its 12th year in the Philippines. It is an annual event led by Canadian communities worldwide to honour the memory of one of Canada's youngest and most popular folk heroes, Terry Fox, who lost his right leg to cancer in 1977 when he was just 18 years old. While in the hospital, the suffering of cancer patients touched him, inspiring him to run across Canada to create a sense of hope and purpose among cancer patients. With fierce determination, he was able to run 26 miles every day for 143 days, raising millions of dollars for cancer research. He eventually succumbed to cancer in June 1981, but he has become an inspiration to millions of people around the world. Today, Terry Fox Runs are held annually in over 50 countries. In the Philippines, all proceeds and funds raised go to the Philippine Cancer Society for cancer treatment. Over half a million pesos were raised in last year's Terry Fox Runs in Manila and Cebu. "Please show your support to a worthwhile cause by joining us in this fun run. You need only to walk, run, bike, or even rollerblade for 2, 3 or 5 kilometers to share the gift of life," Ambassador Sutherland said.
