Environmental Issues

FAC strives to defend and advance Canada's international interests in environmental protection and sustainable development in bilateral, multilateral and regional fora including issues relating to climate change, trade and environment, sustainable forest management, hazardous and toxic substances, desertification, human settlements, biological diversity, biosafety, genetic resources for food and agriculture, air and marine pollution, whaling, and non-Canada-USA freshwater.

To achieve progress in this area of responsibility, the Environment, Energy and Sustainable Development Bureau works with the major international environmental and sustainable development organizations. It also recommends and oversees funding where appropriate. Domestically, the Bureau works toward agreement and productive partnerships with other government departments, agencies and non-governmental environmental, non-nuclear energy, developmental and business organizations. It prepares and monitors implementation of the Department's Sustainable Development Strategy and provides advice and assistance in the areas of environmental assessment and the greening of departmental operations both in Canada and at the 157 missions abroad.
