Getting to and from JFK Airport

There are more 11,000 parking places in Short-Term Parking Lots ($2 per half-hour; $24 per day) and Long-Term Parking Lots ($2 up to 12 hours; $8 per day), reached by free shuttle buses. Security staff now patrol the lots, and there`s even free emergency service for those having car trouble. A new garage, with valet parking, has just been added near Terminals 1, 2 and 3 ($18 first day; $9 for 12 hours).

Because a few unscrupulous cab drivers used to gouge arriving travelers, there is now a flat rate of $30 for a taxi ride from JFK to the first stop in Manhattan. However, the meter runs during a taxi ride to the airport. The taxi dispatcher gives each passenger an information slip with the cab`s medallion number on it - in case there`s a driver- passenger dispute or something is left in the cab. Friday night can be a tough time to find a cab - many drivers prefer to stay in the city for profitable short-run fares.

In each terminal look for the ground-transportation desk with direct-line phones to various bus, van and car services. New York Airport Service  (718-706-9658) runs buses every 15 to 30 minutes, 6 a.m. to midnight, from JFK terminals to Manhattan`s Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station, Port Authority Bus Terminal and midtown hotels for $13. Shared vans have become popular for getting to JFK. SuperShuttle  (800- BLUEVAN and Gray Line (800-451-0455) make about three stops in the city to pick up or drop off passengers and charge $13 - $15 per person. But the best bet for two or more people is a "black car", as the call-car is known. The Manhattan-JFK ride costs about $30, plus tip and tolls ($3.50 for tunnel or bridge). Three of the best call-car services: Dial Car (800-342-5106), Carmel (800-924-9954) and Tel-Aviv (800-222- 9888).

You can even get into Manhattan by subway - if you`re traveling light. The Howard Beach Station of the "A" Line can be reached via the free Long-Term Parking/subway bus (yellow-and-white diagonal stripes on blue), which stops at all terminals. The subway fare is $1.50 to any New York City station.

More JFK info: call 800-AIR-RIDE for automated information on all ways to get to and from JFK and the other New York airports. General information (718-244-4444); medical services, (718-656-5344); police/lost & found (718-244-4225/60); online information www.panynj.gov.

Getting to and from Newark Airport

Transportation by taxi to Manhattan is a bit higher than from the other airports and can range from $35 to $40, plus tip and tolls, depending on time of day. As a result, savvy travelers often choose one of the better, faster and more convenient transportation links. Private car services to Manhattan and other regional points are popular: SuperSaver by Carmel (800-924-9954); Route 22 Limousine & Car Service (800-680- 3334) and Airport Limousine Express (800-633-3222); in New Jersey (800-624-4410).

Olympia Airport Express Bus  (908-354-3330 or 212-964-6233) provides regular coach service for $10 one-way between all terminals and the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd St. and 8th Ave.), Grand Central Terminal (Park Ave. and 41st St.), Penn Station (34th and 8th Ave.) and One World Trade Center (at West St.).

Shared-ride vans, such as SuperShuttle  (800-258-3826) for $17 or Gray Line  (212-315- 3006) minibus for $14, will deliver you to most destinations in Manhattan.

More EWR info: For the latest on transportation, call Newark International Airport (800- AIR-RIDE), an automated 24-hour services; Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.; there is an operator assistance. Information on parking, traffic and weather conditions (888-EWR- INFO); police/lost & found (973-961-6230); online information www.panynj.gov.

Getting to and from La Guardia Airport

By car or cab, without traffic, you are looking at a 20-minute run from Manhattan out along the Grand Central Parkway to LGA and up the ramp that forks right for Delta and US Airways, left for the Central Terminal Building and beyond for the Delta Shuttle at the Marine Air Terminal. Seven parking lots and one garage in front of the Central Terminal Building keep it all tightly packed. Getting between terminals is easy on the free shuttle bus - look for a red-and-white diagonally striped bus with a blue front.

Car-rental choices are limited to Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz and National, which have regular van service from all terminals to off-site lots.

Taxis from La Guardia are available at every terminal, most of the time. On Fridays and rainy nights it can be hard to find a cab. Wait for a cab only in designated taxi lines; the fare to Manhattan runs $16 to $26, plus $3 toll and tip .

New York Airport Service (718-706-9658 for Manhattan or 888-2THEAIR for other cities) is the new bus company that charges $10 and leaves every 20-30 minutes from all terminal arrival areas. In Manhattan it stops at Grand Central Terminal (42nd St. and Park Ave.) and the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd St. and Eight Ave.).

To travel with fewer people, consider a shared-van service: SuperShuttle  (888-258- 3826); Shared Ride Service (800-258-3826). The trip to Manhattan costs $13-$15.

A "black car" from one of New York`s famous call-car services, costs $20 and up, depending on type of car and destination, but it`s a good alternative if cabs are scarce. Two reliable services: Tel-Aviv (212-777-7777); Super Saver by Carmel (800-924- 9954).

More LGA info: For the latest information on transportation to and from LGA, as well as EWR and JFK, call 800-AIR-RIDE. LGA general information (718-533-3400); medical service (718-476-5575) online information www.panynj.gov
