Instructions

If you are outside Canada, you may submit an Application for a Travel Document for Permanent Resident Abroad.

If you are in possession of a Permanent resident card, you should NOT apply for a travel document and may proceed directly to a Canadian port of entry.

If you apply for a travel document, the following documents are REQUIRED to determine if you meet the requirements of the residency obligation of permanent residents in Canada.

Documents in languages other than English or French MUST be accompanied by a certified translation.

1)A completed application form (IMM5524); Please complete the fillable application form and print it for submission to our office.  For ease and speed of processing, we ask that you do not complete the application form by hand.  A separate form must be filled out by each family members who are permanent residents, regardless of their age. In the case of a child under the age of 14, the form must be filled out and signed by one of the child's parents or official guardians.
2)Evidence of Permanent Resident status (i.e. Copy of your Permanent Resident Card or expired Returning Resident Permit) or Landing in Canada (i.e. Copy of your Record of Landing); if the original document was lost or stolen, please provide a police report documenting the circumstances of the loss.
3)Evidence of physical presence in Canada for the period since you have been granted permanent residence or, if you were granted permanent residence or landed more than five years ago, evidence of your physical presence for the five-year period immediately prior to the date of this request. You must demonstrate that you have been physically present in Canada for a minimum of 730 days in the past five-year period.
4A)

If you have been away from Canada for more than 730 days in past five years, you must also provide documentary evidence that you were employed outside Canada, on a full-time basis, by a Canadian business, the public service of Canada, or a province of Canada.

Specifically, you must provide a letter of declaration signed by an official of the business that indicates:

• The position and title of the signing official;
• The nature of the business and how it fits the above description of a Canadian business;
• Details of your assignment or contract outside Canada; and
• Confirmation that the business has not been created primarily for the purpose of allowing you to satisfy your residency obligation.

4B)

If you have been away from Canada for more than 730 days in past five years because you are accompanying a Canadian citizen or a Canadian permanent resident, you must also provide documentary evidence that

• the person you are accompanying is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
• you are the spouse, common-law partner or child of that person;
• you ordinarily reside with that person; and
• if applicable, the person you are accompanying is in compliance with their own residency obligation.

If you are accompanying your common-law partner, please include the "Statutory Declaration of Common-law Union" (IMM 5409). We ask that you print clearly your answers using CAPITAL letters in each box. If a question does not apply to you, write N/A meaning "not applicable" in the space provided.


APPLICANTS MUST ALSO PROVIDE:

• One passport photo of each of the applicants taken within the last 6 months (the name and date of birth written on the back). Click here for photo specifications.    If photographs do not meet these specifications, no file will be created and the application will be returned to the applicant.

• For the security of your documents, we strongly recommend that you send a prepaid, self-addressed return Express Mail envelope, available at the US postal services. We will not return documents using courier services (DHL, FedEX, UPS, etc.)

• Your passport or travel/identity document from your country of citizenship.

• If you are not a USA citizen or USA permanent resident, proof of your present immigration status in the USA (USA visa and I-94 card).

PROCESSING FEE: Your application is subject to a Non-refundable processing fee. Please include with your application a CERTIFIED CHEQUE, OR MONEY ORDER in the amount of: US$ 45 payable to the "Canadian Consulate-General", or
CAD$ 50 payable to the "Receiver General of Canada"

Authority to Release Information to Designated Individuals (IM 5476) (if applicable). We ask that you print clearly your answers using CAPITAL letters in each box. If a question does not apply to you, write N/A meaning "not applicable" in the space provided.


IMPORTANT:

Return your application form ONLY when it can be accompanied by ALL documents / information / funds requested. Partial compliance will serve no purpose other than to delay processing.
